Biotope Lomasona - Trentino

Biotope Lomasona - Trentino

Type of protected area - Where it is located

Typology: Biotope
Region: Trentino-Alto Adige
Province: Trento

The Lomasòn valley, or Lomasona, opens for about 6 km south of the plain of Campo, in western Trentino, along the road that connects the Terme di Comano with Riva del Garda. It is delimited by the limestone walls of the Mesozoic mountains of the Casale (east) and Misone (west) mountains characterized by debris niches, karst caves and powerful cones of ground debris. It is an imposing glacial modeling valley, crossed by the Rio Dal. It preserves strips of forest landscapes and meadows, formerly anthropized, of peat bogs and landslides that make it highly suggestive.

Description

The biotope looks like a wet grassland interrupted here and there by channels and puddles. The vegetation is mostly represented by damp meadows, and more particularly by a herbaceous association dominated by the graminacea Molinia coerulea; in areas where water stagnation occurs, marshy meadows are widespread, where Carex rostrata thickly grows. Interesting aquatic plants, including some algae, live in the pools and canals.
The fauna of the protected area is not very rich, also in relation to the absence of substantial collections of water, which could constitute the habitat of various species; however, it is worth mentioning the nesting of some uncommon waterfowl: the porciglione (Rallus aquaticus), the green reed (Acrocephalus palustris) and the marsh marsh (Emberiza schoeniclus).

In 1987, 287 were identified: of these, 219 are defined as being of local interest and their establishment and management is the responsibility of the municipality (municipal biotopes); the 68 most important are classified as provincial (provincial biotopes), and are the responsibility of the Biotopes Office of the Parks and State Forests Service of the Province.
