The Ficuzza wood, already a royal hunting reserve, is the largest forest in western Sicily; it hosts numerous species of oaks.
The reserve is home to 80% of the animal species of the entire region, including birds and wildlife.
Among the birds of prey, the golden eagle, the peregrine falcon, the Egyptian vulture, the black kite and the red kite deserve a special mention.
Rocca Busambra (1,613 m) is the highest isolated hill in western Sicily. The northern side is characterized by vertical walls, with overhanging stretches, of about 350 meters. The southern slope slopes almost gently. Near the summit, protected within large fractures, small maples grow. The Bosco della Ficuzza develops north of the limestone walls.
The Real Casina di Caccia (Royal Palace) was built at the behest of Ferdinand IV of Bourbon when he came to Palermo due to the Neapolitan revolution (January 1799).
